About local holidays
Germany's holidays vary by federal state (Bundesland). Nine are nationwide (New Year, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May 1st, Ascension, Whit Monday, German Unity Day on October 3rd, Christmas and the day after). Bavaria and Saarland add Epiphany (Jan 6), Corpus Christi, All Saints' and Assumption — the Catholic south reaches thirteen public holidays. October 3rd marks the 1990 reunification. Shops close strictly on Sundays and holidays under the Ladenschlussgesetz.
