March 15 commemorates the 1848 revolution against the Habsburgs, August 20 St Stephen — founder of the Hungarian kingdom in the year 1000, the country's primary national feast. October 23 marks the 1956 uprising against Soviet occupation. Easter, Easter Monday, Whit Monday, All Saints' and Christmas (two days) anchor the Christian side. When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the law often shifts the workday to a nearby Saturday to create a long weekend.
