About local holidays
Greece blends Orthodox and national holidays. Orthodox Easter (usually a few weeks after Catholic Easter) is the biggest feast — spit-roasted lamb, red eggs. March 25 commemorates the 1821 uprising against the Ottoman Empire, October 28 "Όχι Day" — Greece's refusal of the 1940 Italian ultimatum. The Dormition of the Virgin (August 15) empties Athens — everyone heads to the islands. Epiphany (Jan 6) features the blessing of waters and divers racing for crosses thrown into the sea.
