Cardano (ADA) is a third-generation blockchain launched in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's cofounders. It stands out for its scientific approach: every major upgrade is preceded by peer-reviewed academic research. Cardano uses the Ouroboros proof-of-stake protocol and rolls out features in phases named after poets and mathematicians (Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho, Voltaire). Smart contracts arrived in 2021 with the Alonzo hard fork. The ecosystem is smaller than Ethereum's or Solana's but enjoys a very loyal community and partnerships in Ethiopia and Africa around digital identity. Total supply is capped at 45 billion ADA.
