About · Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, launched on January 3, 2009 by an anonymous developer (or group) known as Satoshi Nakamoto, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. It runs on a blockchain — a public, immutable, decentralized ledger that records every transaction and is secured by proof of work (miners solving cryptographic puzzles). Bitcoin's total supply is capped at 21 million BTC, which makes it deflationary by design — a key argument for those who call it "digital gold." The block reward halves every ~4 years (the "halving"), gradually reducing new issuance. BTC has gone through several spectacular cycles: a few cents in 2010, ~$20,000 in late 2017, over $60,000 in 2021, and a new institutional era in 2024 with the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States.
