Ethereum is the second-largest blockchain by market cap. Launched on July 30, 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and his team, it pioneered smart contracts — code that executes automatically when conditions are met. This opened the door to the entire DeFi ecosystem, NFTs, DAOs, and thousands of decentralized applications (dApps). In September 2022, Ethereum completed "The Merge," switching from proof of work to proof of stake and cutting its energy use by ~99.95%. ETH has no hard supply cap, but the EIP-1559 mechanism burns part of every transaction's gas fee, which can make the supply deflationary during high-activity periods. It remains the dominant blockchain for Web3 developers.
