Lions or wolves?

Lions (Panthera leo) are the only truly social big cats, living in prides of 2 to 40 individuals led by related females and 1 to 4 dominant males. Adult males weigh 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lbs), measure up to 2.5 m long, and develop their iconic mane around age 2; darker manes signal higher testosterone and attract females. Lions inhabit sub-Saharan Africa, with a small population of Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) in India's Gir Forest (about 670 individuals as of 2020). They hunt in coordinated groups, mostly females, taking down zebras, wildebeest, and even buffalo. Lions sleep up to 20 hours a day. Their roar can be heard up to 8 km away. Ancient Egyptians worshipped Sekhmet (lion goddess); the lion is England's national animal and appears on the British royal coat of arms.

Gray wolves (Canis lupus) are the largest wild members of the canid family, weighing 30 to 80 kg (66 to 175 lbs) and measuring up to 1.6 m long. They live in packs of 5 to 15 led by a breeding alpha pair. Wolves cover huge ranges (up to 1,000 km of territory) across the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic to North African mountains. Their bite force, around 1,200 PSI, exceeds a lion's at the canines. Wolves communicate through 21 documented vocalizations including howls audible 10 km away, body language, and scent marks. They are the direct ancestors of all domestic dogs, diverging genetically 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. Yellowstone's 1995 wolf reintroduction triggered a trophic cascade: elk populations dropped, willows regrew, and beavers returned, reshaping river ecosystems.
