About local holidays
Japan has sixteen public holidays — the most of any G7 country. Golden Week (April 29 → May 5) chains four holidays together and creates the year's worst traffic. Obon in August, while not official, empties offices. The "Happy Monday" law shifts several holidays to Mondays to create long weekends. Notable dates: February 23 (Emperor Naruhito's birthday) and February 11 (National Foundation Day, marking Japan's mythical founding in 660 BC).
