Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty?

The Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) was designed by engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier under Gustave Eiffel's firm and built from January 28, 1887 to March 31, 1889 for the Exposition Universelle marking the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Standing 330 meters (1,083 feet) tall (including its antenna), it was the world's tallest structure for 41 years until the Chrysler Building (1930). Made of 18,038 puddled iron pieces held by 2.5 million rivets, weighing 10,100 tons, it expands up to 15 cm in summer heat. Initially criticized by Parisian artists (Maupassant dined daily inside it to avoid seeing it), it was meant to be dismantled after 20 years but saved for radiotelegraphy use. Today it welcomes about 7 million visitors annually, the most-visited paid monument in the world.

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) was a gift from France to the United States, dedicated on October 28, 1886. Designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, with internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the same one), the statue stands 93 meters (305 feet) from ground to torch tip and weighs 225 tons. Made of copper sheets 2.4 mm thick over a steel frame, the statue oxidized from copper-brown to its famous green patina by 1920. She holds a tablet inscribed July IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776) and a torch. Her seven-rayed crown symbolizes the seven continents and seas. Located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, she greeted over 12 million immigrants arriving at Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
