XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, launched in 2012 by Ripple Labs (Chris Larsen, Jed McCaleb, Arthur Britto). Designed specifically for cross-border payments between financial institutions, it enables transfers in ~3 seconds for a fraction of a cent. Unlike Bitcoin, XRP isn't mined: 100 billion tokens were pre-mined at genesis. Ripple Labs went through a long legal battle with the US SEC (2020-2023), which eventually ruled that XRP is not a security when sold on secondary markets — a major precedent for the industry. XRP is widely used in Asia and the Middle East via the RippleNet network.
