Cat 🐱
Domestic cats (Felis catus) were first domesticated about 9,000 years ago in the Near East, where they hunted rodents in early agricultural settlements. Genetic studies trace modern house cats to the African wildcat (Felis lybica). Ancient Egyptians revered cats so highly that killing one was punishable by death, and goddess Bastet was depicted as a feline. Cats have 230 bones (humans have 206), can rotate their ears 180 degrees thanks to 32 muscles, and possess a tapetum lucidum behind their retinas that gives them night vision six times better than humans. They typically sleep 12 to 16 hours daily, purr at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz, which may promote bone density and healing. Today there are over 600 million pet cats worldwide, with breeds ranging from the hairless Sphynx to the massive Maine Coon.
