Beach 🏖️
Beach tourism is the world's largest tourism segment, accounting for about half of all international leisure trips. Coastal recreation expanded in the 18th century when British doctors prescribed sea bathing for health; Brighton became a fashionable resort by 1750. The French Riviera (Cote d'Azur), Spanish Costa del Sol, and later destinations like Cancun (developed by Mexico's government from 1970), Bali, and the Maldives followed. Beaches form when waves deposit sand, broken-down quartz, coral, or volcanic rock, over thousands of years. Saltwater contains roughly 35 grams of dissolved salts per liter, and floating is easier in seas like the Dead Sea (342 g/L). Sun exposure boosts vitamin D synthesis, but UV rays cause sunburn and skin cancer; SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent of UVB radiation.
