Generative AI tools like ChatGPT (launched November 30, 2022 by OpenAI), Midjourney (2022), DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, Suno, and Runway have democratized creativity at unprecedented scale. Individuals without formal art or music training can generate professional-quality images, songs, scripts, and videos in seconds. Solo creators and indie studios produce content that once required teams and budgets, the company Cursor's 2024 launch let one developer build apps formerly requiring a startup. AI assists writers like Stephen King (who praised some AI translation work), helps musicians explore harmonies, and accelerates designers' iteration. Economists at MIT and Goldman Sachs estimate AI could boost global GDP by 7 percent ($7 trillion) over 10 years. New roles like prompt engineer, AI ethicist, and synthetic media director are emerging. Like the printing press, photography, or Photoshop, AI may amplify human creativity rather than replace it.

Many creatives view AI with alarm. A 2023 Goldman Sachs report projected that AI could automate 300 million full-time jobs globally, with creative and white-collar roles disproportionately affected. The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike (148 days, the longest WGA strike in history) and SAG-AFTRA strike specifically demanded AI protections, fearing studios would replace screenwriters with LLMs and use AI-generated likenesses of actors.
